English Homework for grades 4-6

Hello! This is probably the wrong time of year for this, but if there's anyone from Australia, the UK or other places that still have a while to go for the school year, well maybe you can use this.

English homework.

Sometimes I struggle to make it interesting.

I'm required to give it once a week and I wanted to make it more interactive and possibly fun.

I saw this idea for having an on-going project that incorporates many of the features of text that we'd previously worked on in class. I tweaked it for my Year Six class for half a term and put the page along with the required paper in small folders.

Would you believe they loved it?! They loved the idea of choice, they loved adding onto to it each week.......they said it was actually...fun!

Even better...I didn't have to sort homework week after week. They had their homework assignments for the next 6 weeks!

I've uploaded it to google docs in Word so you can change it to what you need. Please tell me if that works. I haven't used that in ages. I was too lazy to upload it to TPT. Click here for it.

One more thing for homework.

We recently returned from Easter holidays (off for 3 weeks). Again, I'm required to give English homework. This time I gave a letter with choices.

They had to pick 3 writing choices (to average 1 a week). I did mention reading in the letter, but focused more on writing for this holiday. I copied this cover sheet on bright yellow colored paper, along with several pieces of blank writing paper, and put it in a folder. Easy. Except for grading them when they come back, but hey.

Can you believe they came back showing each other what they picked and what they wrote and were so proud?! I was speechless. I was just so happy to see them enjoy writing and even want to share it with their peers!

Click here for this document in Word so you change it for your needs.

Hope some of you can use this and I can save you some time!

Have a good one xx

FREEBIE FRIDAY!

Oops, a day late.

Hope you're happy and healthy today! I'm enjoying my Easter break. Love it!

Here are some book review forms I created for 3-5th grade at our school. I have a few other options too, just have to round them up. I make a bunch of copies of them and  put them in the folder on the bulletin  board for our Reading Challenge. Maybe you can use them!

Why does it feel so good to throw stuff away?!

Wow!! It is seriously pathetic how happy I am about the amount of stuff in my classroom that I threw out!!

First I started with the school library (which has been a bit neglected). I got the OK from the headteacher to clear out unwanted books and donate them somewhere....my husband and I filled the car. The library is looking so much better!

Then I moved onto my classroom. Teachers from the past have left lots behind. I was unable to use any of the cupboards (there's only 3 as it's a very small classroom!!) because it was full of junk!

Again, my husband and I filled the car and went to the dump/recycle center and it feels like I've lost weight or something...does that make sense? Like dumping all that stuff (none of it was even mine!!) has taken 10 pounds off my classroom-ha ha!

It just feels so nice to have a non-cluttered, simple, organized classroom. I also made my copies for the first month of school and now feel ready! We have another week until we go back, so next week I hope to relax, read and rest.

I wanted to share some freebies:
This is from last year, but I updated it and wanted to share it again. It's for rules or aims for your class (maybe more uppergrade as there aren't pictures).

We discuss the aims of our class and then the children work in partners, coloring in the words and I hang it on the walls. Click here if you want it!

I also just made this:

Students glue in heading, roll dice and draw shapes! Grab it here : )

Off to bed! Have a great weekend!

Oh Kindergarten........

Oh kindergarten teachers, my thoughts are with you as you start/started the school year.

I have taught several years of kindergarten in the past, and while I do love it...........I have to be honest and say I do not love the first day. (don't hate me)

Here is why:
-the crying (kids and parents)
-the screaming crying
-the vomiting (from the anxiety)
-the "runners" (the ones that run after their parents when they leave)
-the screaming crying
-hovering parents peeking through the window
-lunchtime
-dismissal (ah!! don't run off!)
-the screaming crying

Please don't misinterpret this as a negative kindergarten rant.....I really DO love kindergarten! I just think the first day [depends on the kiddos] can be exceptionally difficult...............which leads me to some

Common Core FREEBIE for journals!

After seeing some great money activities in a classroom a couple weeks ago (as seen here), I decided to organize some of my files and put together a 2nd Grade resource of money printables for journals.

One of the activities that I saw looked a little like this:

Students pick 2 cards and record an addition/subtraction equation in their journal/portfolio. They had these cute little coin purses with money to help them! They also had number lines.

Anyway.......I found the Common Core to have a lot of money concepts, so I have Part 1 ready. I got the AMAZING money graphics from The 3AM Teacher...check her out!! She's awesome!

Here are some samples:

This resource is FREE until the weekend!!!
Could you please 'pin' it if you like it? Many thanks!

Have a great day!

Geometry FREEBIES & Paris!

Bonjour!!!

My husband and I popped over to Paris for 5 days over the past weekend (2 1/2 hour train--if only everything was that close!!!). My husband's brother and wife have been living there the past year for work.

It was soooo beautiful and great to be with family again! They were great hosts and took us to their favorite places. I hope we can get over there one more time before they move back to South Africa next month.

I also have a few freebies from a Geometry unit I'm updating (Printables for K-2 Math Journals). Let me know if you like them!

I mentioned before that I'm working on a nouns/verbs pack for journals/notebooks/portfolios...........it will still be a little while before I can finish this....... so I'd like to give you a sample! I hope you like it! Can you please comment/rate in my TPT store, or become a follower of my TPT store if you find it useful? Thanks!

Here's what it look like in a journal (8 1/2 x 12 size, roughly)

Many of these lessons can be used with books from your library,
when students are 'hunting' for nouns or verbs.
